Forbo Flooring introduces Marmoleum Oxyd

Assendelft, October 2010 – Forbo Flooring and Dutch felt artist Claudy Jongstra are collaborating, resulting in a new collection Marmoleum Oxyd. For this Marmoleum collection solely oxide pigments are used. The four subtle colours suit both living and working areas. With the collaboration Forbo and Claudy Jongstra ask attention for the preservation of landscape inheritance.

A natural alliance
Forbo and Studio Claudy Jongstra have started a research project, developing a new Marmoleum with colourants based on plant extracts. This natural alliance between Forbo and Studio Claudy Jongstra is a perfect union. Both make interior products that owe their beauty to the synergy created by combining natural raw materials and pigments. Craftsmanship, old-fashioned skills and sustainability are equally important to both.

Claudy Jongstra
Claudy Jongstra is an internationally celebrated artist who works with natural materials. Nature itself is her source of inspiration and she factors in nature’s needs at every step. She uses wool, silk and other natural fibres, making the final product very tactile and endowing it with a certain sensuality. Her work features very unusual colour properties owing to her use of plant-based colourants.

‘111 years cradle-to-cradle’
Marmoleum is made from natural and renewable raw materials: linseed oil, rosin, jute, wood flour, limestone and pigment. Basically nothing has changed since Frederick Walton invented linoleum in 1860 – his original recipe still plays a key role. Already for 111 years Forbo Flooring is producing Marmoleum in line with the ‘cradle-to-cradle’ philosophy. Claudy Jongstra has developed a new Marmoleum collection where only oxide pigments have been used. The four new colours reflect her view on both colour and interior.

Oxide pigments
The character of this collection – ‘Marmoleum Oxyd created by Claudy Jongstra’ – is different to that of the familiar Marmoleum. It is refined, powdery, blurred. The oxide pigments used create an appearance that brings to mind the patina that covers historical statues. No hard, bright freshness, but a poetic energy. The subtle colours denote the natural dyes of madder and weld. The designs exude a subdued mood that reminds one of pastel artwork. The end result is serene and void of any unnecessary embellishment.

Hortus Botanicus Amsterdam
With the introduction of Marmoleum Oxyd, Forbo Flooring is backing Claudy Jongstra’s philosophy. In line with this, some of the profits from sales of Marmoleum Oxyd will be donated to Hortus Botanicus in Amsterdam. Hortus Botanicus is a modern botanical garden where visitors of all ages can enjoy the beauty and diversity of plants from across the globe.
